RESEARCH has indicated that community arts projects such as murals encourage cohesion within a community. June McEwan has been working with communities for several years, helping them create art in public spaces. She has a remarkable ability to inspire the community into expressing their own ideas and views of how the mural should look, and then to to translate those ideas˜with the help of local residents, |
|||
schoolchildren and workers˜into strong visual statements. The resultant works are viewed with pride by the local population; even the most cynical of observers are surprised when the murals are virtually untouched by graffiti or vandalism. | |||
One reason for this is June‘s insistence on community involvement and
participation, which creates a strong sense of pride and ownership.
Community murals enhance community spirit,
encourage teamwork, and bring together members of the community in an
exciting and creative way. |
